After Fire!

April 24-27, 2004

Saturday, April 24, 2004 (pre-journal)

The Thai Ex-pat association runs a very topical web site with the richest creams of important and useful information for 'farangs' who live in Thailand. Much of it revolves around the "do's" ... the best of Thailand. But, bits of it, helpfully, also broadcast the taboos: the "don't even think of it" kind of stuff.

When I first moved to Bangkok I pretty much stuck with the "do's" ... though, through naive ignorance, I frequently 'overstayed' my welcome by as much as ... well, I don't want to confess to the feloniousness of it ... suffice to say that I paid the maximum exit fine.

Anyway, this advice is from the "don't" page:

Do not overstay in Thailand!

The maximum overstay fine in Thailand is 20,000 baht (approx US$450). Foreign children are subject to fines for overstaying in Thailand only when over the age of seven.

You can easy clear an heavy overstay at the Airport, but if you are caught by Immigration before you reach the airport, you will be jailed and deported until you can pay your fine and show a one way ticket back to your home country.

If you overstay by one day, there is no charge. After that, it's 200B per day, so 2 days is a 400B fine, 3 days 600B etc. ...

Paying the fine is simple. When going through Immigration, they will notice the overstay and take you to a desk to pay it, taking about 5 minutes in all. Fines can also often by paid in advance at any Immigration bureau. You will not be jailed it you volontarily clear up your overstay.

Warning - Note that overstaying is technically breaking the law and while there is little problem with it if you 'surrender' yourself to Immigration at the airport, it can be a very different story if you are stopped by the police beforehand for whatever reason and are found to have overstayed - no matter for how long. This may well lead to you being detained in one of the feared Immigration Detention Center for a few days while your case is processed. Needless to say, this is an experience you can well do without, as conditions inside have been described by Amnesty International as 'cruel and degrading' and 'seriously overcrowded'.

It's been a while since we visited with the girls on the chain gang. Chowchilla, CA and Gatesville, TX have a nice prison ring to their names ... sort of a confining 'stir' to the sound ... also, up comes visions of dirt roads, high walls well set back from rusty perimeter chain-links ... and double-wide trailers fitted with plastic flowers and microwave-safe plates for the pleasure of the 'screws' at the end of their shifts. Durlene, Tracy and Dee Ann ... well, central casting couldn't come up with a better trio of convict names. Sheila seems to be the odd one out: a bit too wholesome; could be she is innocent.

I'm looking for someone to make my time easier. I'm seeking someone I can exchange views and ideas with. I love to laugh. I'm a Texan, I grew up in the country. I'm the middle of three daughters. My parents have been married nearly 50 years. I love Yorkshire Terriers, arts and crafts, and Mexican food. I enjoy yoga, meditation and aerobic and reading. I'm part German and I hope one day to see Germany. I graduated from high school in 1977 and took Vocational Office Education. I'm attending college here now. I've never been in any legal trouble before this and never will be again.

I'm an overcomer of my situation. I'm captured but not conquered. I don't play games. I'm honest, sincere and sentimental. I find a reason to be happy everyday. The Lord turned what the devil meant for my demise into my eternal salvation in which I'm grateful.

I like hugs and kisses, talks with older people. I love the ocean and thunderstorms. I'm affectionate and a romantic at heart. I treat people the way I'd like to be treated. I know the Holy Spirit will lead the right person in my path. I will write all who reply.

Hi, I'm Sheila, 5' 6", 140 lbs., 40DD-32-36, long brown hair, hungry green eyes and full, luscious lips. I'm a very outgoing, fun-loving, carefree, honest, uninhibited woman. You can call me "Ms. Freaky" (smile) if you'd like. I enjoy dancing, camping, just life in general, with a strong, sexual appetite.

I'm in search of a man who is willing to stand by me, enjoy me and my company, who'll mind and not be afraid to take what he wants or receive what I'll give him. Who's honest, loving, caring, and financially secure. Nympho's are accepted.

If you're looking to experience life all over again, send me a letter and let's ride together.

This is just a hint of where we will be on the 27th ... I am using Don Bull's step-reasoning here. Maybe only Don will pick this up.

PS: As neither wine nor bread is on the Atkins or South Beach diets it's certainly not a miracle that Alexandrina Maria da Costa plumped out on the stuff for 13 years. Hey, she had to have become a real tub on that diet ... no wonder she was paralyzed; the booze alone likely kept her in bed! She was probably like Mr. Joyboy's mother in the movie: THE LOVED ONE.

But, had this "communion" been the actual 'body and blood' of the Christ (i.e. , His rawish meat) ... as the Holy Mother Church teaches ... Alexandrina would have definitely been feeding exclusively off the bottom tier of the Atkins food pyramid ... and wasting away to nothing long before a decade and three had passed. (*)

Pope beatifies six from Europe, South America
Pontiff's total now 1,330 (**)

VATICAN CITY (AP) -- Pope John Paul II added six people Sunday to the ranks of Catholics on the path to possible sainthood, beatifying 19th and 20th century Europeans and South Americans at a ceremony in St. Peter's Square.

Among them was a paralyzed woman, Alexandrina Maria da Costa of Portugal, who the Vatican says lived the last 13 years of her life eating only the bread and wine of Communion.

(*) Both Atkins and South Beach recommend leafy vegetables and certain whole fruits to ensure a healthy diet.

(**) John Paul has beatified 1,330 people in his 25-year pontificate, more than all his predecessors in the past 500 years combined.

Res Ipsa!

Monday, April 26, 2004

Yesterday THOCBDC 'swipe-linked' a document from the OFFICE OF PAPAL LITURGICAL CELEBRATIONS. It is entitled "Beatifications By Pope John Paul II, 1979-2000".

The list suggests that certain names seem to invite beatifications.

Is this what the parents had in mind when they went to the Registrar's Office to officially 'pen' their child's name in the big book?

Or are these just nicknames that the other kids gave them in school for being such 'goody-goodies'? (*)

Marie Guyart of the Incarnation
Elizabeth of the Trinity
Marie Teresa of Jesus Gerhardinger
Alphonsa Mattathupandatu of the Immaculate Conception
Teresa of the Infant Jesus

Mother Maria of Jesus Deluil-Martiny
Pauline of the Heart of Jesus in Agony Visentainer
Agnes de Jesus Galand

John Baptist Scalabrini

(*) Mobs of New York and the Mafia also enjoyed amplifying the colorful foibles of their little chums: John 'the Enforcer' Marcelli, Mike 'Baby Crusher' O'Brady and Tony 'Fats' Bambiatti come to mind.

PS: The 'minders' are taking a long weekend ... (under the guise of "closed for routine services"?). Anything to do with May Day, which America long refused to honor as a holiday as it was deemed to be too Red? (*):
