Today we checked into the Plaza Athenee hotel for three days of R & R ... as if we needed it.
PS: The American ambassador's residence in Bangkok is on one very expensive piece of dirt.
PPS: Here are some other interesting roof tops as seen from our hotel suite.
PPPS: A broader picture of what is around us:
The Plaza Athenee's Royal Club lounge on the 26th floor is as good as it gets.
Gee ... we even don't have to leave our floor.
PS: Rung and her daughter, Nam, visited us for lunch.
PPS: A night view from here.
The Athenee Residence staff hold a party just before turning the place over to the owners. It looks like they had fun ... and many of them will continue to work at the Athenee Residence after we move in.
For our final dinner at the Plaza Athenee we chose the hotel's Silk Road restaurant. Though it is Cantonese it offers Peking Duck. While we were waiting for our first course in walked former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra (*) along with four guests and several bodyguards. They ate in a private dining room behind closed doors.
Pom and Golf joined us for dinner.
Aside from the obligatory duck we had won ton soup.
(*) THOCBDC has also had close encounters with Bush and Putin in the past. Watcharee, Paul and I were within touching distance of Putin at the Grande Europa Hotel in St. Petersburg several years ago. Tonight Watcharee and I were just tables away from Thaksin. Neither one of these leaders pretended that they were gods ... unlike the dim bulb Bush who seized a whole Berlin hotel for his megalomaniacal ego.
Checking out of the Athenee Plaza hotel.
My friend, Dan, from Shanghai and Taipei, sent these photos of Pandas that were rescued after the earthquake.
