January 1-8, 2010
The evening was all about four F-words: friends, food, fireworks and floating things. And, it all happened here at The Peninsula under a full moon.
As I took so many photos last night I am going to string this out over several days.
Today, deals with just FRIENDS.
The second New Year's Eve F word was FOOD. The Peninsula always offers a great buffet at its Terrace restaurant which is conveniently located immediately adjacent to the river. Beef from America and oysters from New Zealand were the winners in the "how far did they come" race. But, the tastiest items were decidedly local.
The last two of our New Years Eve F words will finally take THOCBDC out of 2009 and into 2010. They are FIREWORKS and FLOATERS.
The FIREWORKS that I captured came first from the boat operated by The Peninsula hotel
... followed by FIREWORKS from The Mandarin Oriental hotel.
The FLOATERS were boats from here and there.
Thai lizards are dangerous; also are some 'nouns' in strange languages. *
* Who would have ever equated women with danger?
The garage annex to the Athenee Residence is about to get two new restaurants. It already has "Bread" which is a French themed cafe. The first new one is "AD Makers Pub and Restaurant" and it promises live music.
The second new restaurant here is "Hyde and Seek".
This morning was historic! It was the first Thailand meeting of University of California (Berkeley) Boalt Hall alumni. We met at the Dusit Thani Hotel which is located near the intersection of Rama IV and Silom Road, here in Bangkok. About a dozen of us were there; only three 'farangs' ... the rest were Thais who had received JDs or LL.Ms at Boalt.
Who is Stanley? And, what is he all about? Apparently the world is being swamped by a sea of requests stemming from South Florida ... requests to put Stanley on a tour of the world. THOCBDC isn't quite sure how to handle this. So, with a little help from our friends our Stanley was shown the interior of a car, an exercise mat, a view from our porch and a lady at Ruam Rudee Massage. THOCBDC was tempted to take its camera to Patpong, Nana and Soi Cowboy ... but, my 'higher power' * reminded me that Stanley lives in an innocent world.
Watcharee took Stanley on a tour of our neighborhood. Among other places, things and people Stanley visited soy food stalls, kids collecting trash, cops on duty, mega-malls, toy villages, SkyTrain ticket dispensing machines, the SkyTrain itself and a security guard watching over a Spirit House.
