A rainy (and traffic-ee) night in Bangkok.

Monday, July 26, 2010 (Asanha Bucha Day in Bangkok)

Only fellow Geo Cachers will get this. Yes, such arcane things as "Red 5179", "Gazing at Bronze", "Walk Over", "Holding Something Up" and "Rocky".

PS: This poor little cat is about to be attacked by a stick monster.

Tuesday, July 27, 2010 (Buddhist Lent)*

Our Norwegian/Thai friends visited us over the holidays. Kjell (the husband and father) is married to Tangtai. The couple have two children: Isabelle and Petter. When at home in Norway they use English as an in house language for group talk; the same for when they visit Thailand. When speaking with their kids they use Norwegian or Thai depending upon who is instigating the chat. At school the kids learn in Norwegian and English. The result: the parents are decently bilingual while the kids are brilliantly trilingual.**

* According to William Page, in a letter to The Nation (today) this should not be referred to as Buddhist Lent. He writes: "... pansa is the Thai translation of the Pali word vassa. It refers to the rainy season, during which Buddhist monks remain in their monasteries, devote themselves to study and meditation, and do not venture abroad. The Buddha originally prescribed this practice because householders complained that monks sometimes stepped on rice seedlings, small creatures and insects when walking about during the rainy seasons.

** This means the kids have the advantage. They can speak to either parent without the other one knowing what is going on. And, they can speak between themselves without one parent knowing what is being said ... and by alternating between Thai and Norwegian the kids can totally confuse their listening parents.

PS: Yes, those other folks in the photo are Rung, Name1 and Watcharee.

1 Apparently Petter has a crush on Name.

PPS: For those geo-freaks among us who weren't able to visually catch one of the the caches of yesterday here is an enhanced photo. It is a black nano.

While filming the new east face of River City a couple of real faces from the past faced me from the river.*

* Crew of one of The Oriental's ferries. Having lived at The Oriental for 2 1/2 years I took this ferry literally hundreds of times.

PS: What happened to this micro park within Lumpini Park? Is there a connection between this destruction and the stick creature that attacked the cat?* Both horrors were just meters apart.

* Please excuse any redundant photos.

Really "Close To Home".

Ratzo believes that ordaining women as priests is as criminal as priests raping children.

PS: On a lighter note traffic in Bangkok on a Friday evening sucks.

Local sports and local traffic seen from high up.
